Still Not Sure Who to Vote For In The Canadian Election?

Posted on Oct 11th, 2008 by otter : Spiritual Off-Roader otter
Hello All,

This is probably my last pre-election blog (I might write about the results, because heck this is a big deal, right?).  (Actually, all this week I didn't write about politics or the economy - I painted . . .  and it was good.)

Why are some people so short-sighted?  I just heard a guy on the radio ranting about how he doesn't want a carbon-tax, because he doesn't want to pay more taxes, and because he already pays enough for gasoline. . . . yadda, yadda, yadda - the same old, same old negative complaining.   And, yet, in the same breath he is howling about how much he's losing in the stock market, and how his job is in danger.  I wish people would stop and consider that everything which is happening isn't "the end" . . .  it's actually "the beginning."

The people who are panicking right now might want to consider the following. Maybe just maybe, a move to a sustainable enconomy might just stimulate the economy and create jobs?  We need people to invent and implement new green technology.  All the people who are no longer building houses could be employed to retro-fit existing homes, and make them more energy-efficient.  When we get past fearing short-term pain like paying a bit more for fuel, and focus on all the positive ways we can dig ourselves out of the "current economic crisis" by building "micro-economies"  with an emphasis on locally produced food and other consumer goods, we will have more than enough jobs and prosperity to go around.

I have been really disillusioned with the way the media and the Conservative Party have been treating Stephane Dion (and I'm not generally a Liberal supporter).  It made me think about the lyrics from the song, Kermit the Frog sang, "It's Not Easy Being Green."

"It's not that easy being green . . . and, people tend to pass you over, 'cause you're not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water . . .  or stars in the sky. . . . Green can be cool and friendly like . . . . and green can be big like an ocean, important like a mountain or tall like a tree . . ."

I am so tired of mean-spirited political bullies like Stephen Harper.  I lived under that kind of regime here in Alberta under Ralph Klein.  That kind of leadership serves to supress and ridicule progressive and optimistic thinking, and cultivates the baser instincts in people like - fear, hostility and greed.  I am not alone in thinking that we human beings are better than that "dog-eat-dog" every man for himself mentality.

A poll just released today shows the Conservatives in the lead.  I hope they don't get a majority, because that would be like giving them the keys to all the things we treasure in this country like healthcare and the environment, and letting them do whatever they want.  Another minority would force all the parties to dump their partisan posturing, and focus on cooperation.  I believe Canadians do not want another election any time soon, nor do they want a dictatorship.  But, what's a person to do?  With three parties sharing the left of the spectrum in this country, vote-spliting is a serious concern.

Many of you may have heard of this website:  Vote for Environment  While its primary focus is on getting environmentally conscious parties and members of parliament elected, it is also useful for those people concerned about spliting the vote.  If you are in a riding where vote-spliting might be an issue, then this site might help you vote strategically.

Here's their promotional video:

If you are a student, have students in your life, or are considering staying home instead of voting, then Rick Mercer has an appeal for you . . .
Rick's Rant: Voting 101

Another website to check out is the David Suzuki Foundation.  While half the world is being swept up in fear and paranoia about the plunging stock-market, the other half of the world understands that this is the end of the old, carbon-addicted economy and the dawn of a new and sustainable one.  We can't save the planet while buying into an economy based on consuming more and more.  . . .  and here's one more video, just for fun.  . . .

oh otter darlin'.   I love everything you've written here.  this is the letter that I just this minute sent in response to a piece of political yuck I got in my snailmail box.

Dear Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc of Arlington, Virginia,

I received your mailer asking me to vote against Mark Udall in Colorado because he doesn't support Oil Shale drilling here.  You say he wants to create jobs in other states but not here.  This is simply slander and fear mongering.  Please do not send me anymore of your propaganda.  I very much support Mark Udall.  He is very much for creating jobs in Colorado.  He will support an energy bill that supports the creation of CLEAN and SUSTAINABLE energy jobs in Colorado.  Oil shale development is one of the least smart uses of energy we could choose at this time.  Besides being incredibly destructive to our amazing landscapes, it will take significantly more energy to extract the oil from the shale than that extracted oil will produce in the long run.

I appreciate that your organization exists to support builders and contractors.  Perhaps you could support them into the future by helping them be ahead of the learning curve as we transition to a clean energy economy.  Bringing an end to global warming and facing the end of oil does not have to mean the end of human commerce or the end of prosperity.   It does have to mean smart choices for our future and continued or even expanded reliance on fossil fuels is not smart.

Here's an example of a great look at a healthy, sustainable prosperous future.  The Island in the Wind, Samso, Denmark ….  http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/07/07/080707fa_fact_kolbert
What if all of America could do what this little island in Denmark has done?  We have the ingenuity, the will, the resources.  Let's go together into a bright future.

Here's one positive, local organization that I support wholeheartedly.  http://www.cleanenergyeconomy.net/  I live in Western Colorado.  I love this place deeply.  I want the oil shale to stay in the ground where it will do the least amount of harm.

I support creating clean, sustainable, healthy jobs in Colorado.  I support a prosperous, sustainable, healthy future for Colorado, the United States and the World, so I will continue to support Mark Udall.

Thank you for your consideration.
-Dawn Dexter

Hi Dawn,

Excellent letter!  The key to facing both the “financial crisis” and the “climate change crisis,” is for the media and the politicians to turn down the fear-mongering and take a breather.  Think of the difference between the words, “crisis” and “challenge.”  People respond to a “crisis” in one of two ways.  They either over-react, or they shut down.  I know intense words like “crisis,” “disaster” and “meltdown” get people's attention, but it becomes like “the boy who cried wolf.”  At first, people respond with a high degree of adrenaline, but after a while they stop listening.

We are undergoing a massive shift in world consciousness.  People who are “already there” will see this in a positive light and will take up the challenge of creating a new and sustainable economy.  Those who aren't yet, will fret and panic, feeling angry and resentful …  the more we're attached to the current situation, the harder the transition will be.

Howdy Otter…the Suzuki/Mercer report cracked me up!:)  Thanks …I neede that today.  I am in the field all next week so did the advance poll.  Did something I haven';t done before….voted for the Green party.  I'm so fed up with the other children & their parties, I figured I may as well put some $ in the Green coffers.  The rep for the Green party here in the Yukon seems to be pretty switched on with the new earth type of thinking & was the only one who never attacked any other party member.
It astounds me that the Liberals expect me to forget all the squandering of our $ in past yrs.  They talk like they have an unblemished record.  Guess that's why I don't delve too deeply into politics.  I figure the lot of them are a bunch of liars & thieves.  The ones who start out with good intent soon get power drunk or somehting else & fall in line with the rest of them.
Hope you are well…twb

oh.  hurray for the Green party.  They are gaining more influence around the world.

I just heard Robert F Kennedy of the National Resources Defense Council speak for Obama in Aspen.  It was uplifting.  I'll try to write a blog about it soon.  But I will probably be busy writing more letters as well.

Hi TWB,

When it comes down to it, we're not just electing a party or a leader, we're electing an MP.  Sounds like you made a sound choice.  The reason you site for being turned off politics is shared by a great many voters on both sides of the border.  I'm past wanting a leader to “deliver us.”  I just want a bunch of people in Ottawa who have the best interests of the country at heart, (and not their own interests or those of their political cronies.)  I guess we shall see what we get Tuesday night.  I figure it this way, the people most lusting for power might just get in - and that might not be such a bad thing, you know.  They will have one heck of a mess to deal with, and maybe that will spell the end to “me first” politics.  I'll be glad to get back to painting and making my own little corner of the world a better place for a while.  Stay well and have a good week in the field.

Hey Dawn,  I'm looking forward to your writing about Robert F. Kennedy's speech.  He comes up here to work with an organization called, Riverkeepers (which I'm sure you are familiar with).  They're working to preserve our waterways up here from pollution and from diversion for commercial purposes.  People are making a huge deal out of oil these days. The need for clean water sources will eclipse oil in a few short years as the next new “crisis.”  I hope their work will turn the crisis mentality into one of sane management.

I hope I can write something coherrent.  I was so thrilled about the talk and I took copious notes, but I wonder if I can put it down to words properly.  I'm going to let it settle a bit.  What an inspiring person for sure.  :-)
